Former Giants Star Shares Brutal Honesty To Daniel Jones

The New York Giants signed quarterback Daniel Jones to a four-year, $160 million contract extension last offseason, but they may already be thinking about his replacement.

The Giants own the sixth overall pick in the NFL Draft this week, and many feel they may end up selecting a quarterback.

Former New York signal-caller Kerry Collins knows what that’s like.

Back in 2004, the Giants landed Eli Manning in the draft, which spelled the end of Collins’ tenure in the Big Apple. Collins remembers that well.

“It’s basically saying, ‘We don’t believe in you anymore, we’re going to bring in somebody else,'” Collins said, via Paul Schwartz of The New York Post. “I’m sure if it happens that way, Daniel will be a pro and he’ll do what he has to do, but he knows he’s out of there at some point. Some point soon.”

Jones is under contract, but his deal is not guaranteed after 2024. That means New York can stick with him through next season and then cut bait, giving way to whichever quarterback it potentially selects in the draft.

Ironically enough, Big Blue took Jones with the sixth overall pick back in 2019. He ended up supplanting Manning as the starter that ensuing season.

Jones showed flashes of brilliance early on, and in 2022, he appeared to be breaking out, as he led the Giants to the playoffs and even guided them to a Wild Card Round win over the Minnesota Vikings.

That prompted New York to re-sign him last March, but he played in just six games this past year, throwing for 909 yards, two touchdowns and six interceptions before tearing his ACL.

Some feel that the Giants would actually be better off taking a wide receiver at No. 6, as New York is severely lacking in terms of weapons.
