Rumor: New York Knicks Expected To Reward Head Coach With Contract Extension
Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Knicks could not overcome all the injuries in game seven against the Indiana Pacers on Sunday. With a trip to the conference finals on the line, the Knicks fell victim to the greatest shooting performance in a game seven in NBA history. Now that the season is over, fans are wondering what this team will do in the offseason. According to reports, the team plans to extend head coach Tom Thibodeau.

Report: New York Knicks & Tom Thibodeau Extension Likely

Stefon Bondy of the New York Post reported that Tom Thibodeau wants to stay with the New York Knicks. “That’s something that my agent will take care of,” Thibodeau said in a recent interview. “The Knicks have been great to me. So this is where I want to be.” The veteran coach is entering the final year of his five-year deal with the team. It is at this point the team either fires the coach or extends him.

While nothing is official until the pen hits the paper, the report also indicated the New York Knicks were interested in keeping their coach. Despite yesterday’s loss, Tom Thibodeau has been successful with the Knicks. In four seasons, he is 175-143 (.550) and has led the team to numerous playoff appearances. This will be a decision that divides the fanbase.

Should They Extend Their Head Coach?

There has been a lot of buzz about Tom Thibodeau being the reason for the many injuries to the team. Historically, the head coach has a small rotation and relies on those players for a heavy workload. However, some of the injuries are likely freak accidents that could have happened under anyone’s watch. Ultimately, the New York Knicks should look to extend Thibodeau.

Outside of extending their head coach, the New York Knicks will need to retool this roster to compete next season. Reports indicate the team is looking to land another superstar player, whether that is through free agency or via trade. Despite how the season ended, this team has a solid foundation and should compete in the Eastern Conference for the next few years.
