Los Angeles Chargers will meet with rising CB prospect Decamerion Richardson before 2024 NFL Draft

The Los Angeles Chargers are predicted to go with an offensive player in round one of the 2024 NFL Draft. Past that, where could they turn? Their roster has plenty of holes, and they need a productive day two and three in order to fill a handful of them.

On defense, cornerback remains a need. Asante Samuel Jr. has proven to be a good NFL CB, but he still has inconsistencies. They added Kristian Fulton in free agency, but he must stay healthy to produce. Past those two, the position is unproven on the Chargers depth chart.

Mississippi State CB Decamerion Richardson has been climbing draft boards, and he will meet with the Chargers before the draft.

Richardson's draft projection was quiet in January and February. That being said, his stock has risen noticeably over the last month. Richardson is a CB with prototypical NFL size (6'2, 188 pounds).

Richardson did not fill up the stat sheet in pass defense during his time at a bulldog. That being said, the talent around him did not live up to the opponents' talent around the SEC. His physical traits are what have scouts intrigued right now.

In 2023 as a senior Richardson saw action in 12 games while playing 781 snaps. He logged decent 57 tackles, 16 assists, and made 21 stops. In coverage Richardson had 2 pass breakups, no interceptions, and surrendered QB rating when targetted of 90.1.

The former Mississippi State defender is a willing tackler in the run game and plays with great awareness when attacking. His movement skills are elite for a cornerback of his size. His zone coverage is a plus, too.

On the other hand, Richardson was often caught behind on double moves at the college level. Top WR prospect Malik Nabers had a great game against Richardson and State's secondary in 2023.

He doesn't show great hand usage in coverage, either. Often, receivers simply outworked him at the catch point to pull down receptions.

All in all, Richardson has aspects to build on, but he is a player that is worth taking a shot on sometime early on day three. Don't be surprised if he's a third-round pick, either. The Chargers are clearly interested.
